W.A. Yancey, 67, one of the best known men in Telfair County, died of a heart attack at his home here about 8 o'clock Wednesday night after an illness lasting over a period of six weeks. Mr. Yancey was born in Jasper County June l5, 1875, and was the son of the late William and Mallie Barnes Yancey. He was married 46 years ago to Miss Berta Lee Webb, and they had made their home here and in Helena for many years. Mr. Yancey had been a member of the police force in McRae about 40 years and the greater part of that time was Chief of Police, bearing a record of honest and conscientious performance of his duty. He was held in highest esteem by both white and colored, and bore the reputation of being one of the best police officers in the state. Funeral services will be held from the home Friday morning at ll o'clock, conducted by the Rev. E.M. Overby and the Rev. A. D. Woodle. Pallbearers will be J.S. Stamps, StuartEvans, C.A. Hyals, W.M Booker, W.E. Bradfield, A.W. Waller, George Lowery and J. D. Raynor. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs Roy Brown of Bremerton, Washington; Mrs. L Gandy or McRaie; Mrs. Charles Ferguson, of Sandusky, Ohio, three sons, Askew Yancey, of Wauchula Fla. J.B. Yancey of Savannah, and Buster Yancey of the U. S. Army stationed at Camp White, Oregon; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. W. R. Mason, and Mrs. C. B. Hodges, of Atlanta; Mrs. Will Powell of this county; and one brother, Swance Yancey of College Park. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with Harris & Smith Funeral Home in charge.
