The the gin was powered by horse or mule to make steam, and everyone in that part of the country brought their cotton to him to be ginned. During the Creek Indian wars, James served in Boston's company of the 2nd Alabama mounted volunteers. On 3 Jan. 1830 he was commissioned a Lt. in the 26th Volunteer Regiment from Monroe co. and on 1 Apr. 1837 was promoted to Captain. James was always referred to as "Captain Jim". |
