Johnson Thomas, Pvt., Furnished a substitute A.H. Gilbert. 1850 Census list 2 Thomas Johnsons living Gwinnett Co. PR Widow V.E. Johnson applied Gwinnett Co. 2/16/93. She lived at Yellow River. She had been a GA resident since 5/28/39, they married 9/23/56. She stated that Thomas Johnson was wounded in train collision, was hurt severely and left leg badly scalded. Amputation was considered. His death resulted from wound, he died at home in Dekalb Co. 1/23/88. His leg turned black from knee to ankle, shingling in places as large as your hand, baring the bone plainly up to view. Sworn statement from 2 sons, O.H. Johnson and F.E. Johnson, ages 30 & 24, dated 3/2/93 tells how their Father, Thomas Johnson, was never able to get around very well, and suffered and died from his bad leg. Witness' Andrew Garner and J.T. Jordan stated that Johnson was wounded in train collision was sent off and never returned. Theo W. Davis also a witness. Witness Luther Mason stated that the members of Capt. G.W. Johnson's Company had a collision in route from Augusta to Chattanooga 6 miles above Ringold. Thomas Johnson was caught under a smashed box car. He was trapped for over an hour. When we extricated him from under the wreck, he was badly bruised and scalded from the back down. He was senseless for a long time. Witness assisted in carrying him off and did not think that he would survive. Witness knew him before and after the injury and he was never the same.
