Wells James H., Pvt., Enlisted 5/7/62, Stone Mountain, Continuously absent sick with rheumatism, Deserted 2/20/64. 1850 Census list James H. Wells age 13 living Gwinnett Co. in the household of Abner Wells, a farmer. PR Applied 12/20/99 Carroll Co. Born 3/19/36 Gwinnett Co. GA resident all of life except a few months in 1888 in AL. Lives with Son in law, Wife helpless, must depend on Son and Son in law, a farmer all his life. Stated that he was last with the command about 2/20/64 at Savannah. He was sent to the hospital at that time from disease brought on by complications from Measles and chronic diarrhea and exposure. Sent to Macon hospital after a few weeks. Was sent home to Clayton Co. on a 60 day furlough about 4/1/64. Dr. Parker certified on furlough that he was still unable to return when 60 day furlough was up. The Doctor continued to certify extensions until the war was over. Was not able to go to Atlanta for parole until May when Father in law carried him. Statement certified by Carroll Co. Ordinary 1902. Witness' Thomas L. Dougherty & W.R. Raney. Raney thinks that Wells was at home on sick furlough at the time of the surrender. Raney was convalescent at the hospital, and was detailed to nurse Wells until he left the hospital in a few weeks. Wells moved to Haralson Co. and applied for transfer of pension to that county 1/9/04. Drew 1907.
